Picyune now the Picaresque!

The LR Picyune Blog is moving and changing its name----to the "Picaresque." To save everyone a trip to the dictionary, a "picaresque" is a saga of a flawed hero. And there are many such tlaes in LR these days, with many flawed heroes. So for more on the dealings of Larry and the gang, and to find out what REALLY is going on in your village, check out the Picaresque at www.lrpicaresque.blogger.com.

Mayor Larry Lights up the Night

Lots of us like Los Ranchos because of the quasi-country bucolic feel of the place, despite its proximity the the largest truckstop in the world otherwise known as Albuquerque. Since the village was incorporated in 1958, succesive governments have gone to great lenghts to maintain the countrified facade in the face of continued g rowth. Regulations to keep the night sky peacefully dark have been enshrined in the municipal codes for years. That's why there are no residential street lights in LR, and the LR commercial district---a few miles of north fourth---is charmingly nearly devoid of the garish eyetrash signage that typifies the Puke city to the south.

But there is one big exception---Gemini fireworks. The place is awash in neon and those crazy cloth tubes blown up with fans. Wildly gyrating searchlights illuminate the sky untill the very wee hours, advertising dangerous pyrotechnics for the foolhardy to play with in the vicinity of bone-dry bosque . But wait---the searchlights are supposed to be illegal. In fact, they are illegal even in the big 'cracky to the south, having been targeted by a state-mandated "Dark Skies" law. What gives? And how come we're still selling fireworks at all, what with the village nearly going up in flames just a short year ago? How about it, Mayor Abraham? Does it have anything to do with the big campaign sign you had up over Gemini during the election?
